How Can swelling And Pain In The Knee Be Treated?

My dad has SEVERE pain and swelling and in both legs below the knee. When he went to the ER yesterday (with only one knee swollen) the Dr told him that it was not fluid in his knee, but a gel-like substance. Now, today, after taking super strong pain meds and antibiotics overnight, both lower legs are swollen! While he was telling me this on the phone, he had to stop talking 3 different times within 10 minutes due to the pain. Any ideas??

General & Family Physician 's  Response
As you wrote it is acute condition as swelling in other knee developed overnight and firstly it was in one knee now both have swollen it might be due to systemic involvement in form of generalised edeoma d/t acute illness. If it is chronic then you must have to rule out rheumatic arthritis with help of doctor
